🥣 The Basics of Homemade Granola
The beauty of granola is that it’s endlessly adaptable. Once you understand the basic ratio of grains, oil, and sweetener, you can swap in whatever you’ve got in your pantry.
Start with your base:
Grains: Rolled oats or a mixed grain cereal like the 9 grain flakes from Azure Standard
Oil: Coconut oil, butter
Sweetener: Honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, cane sugar, or molasses
Then add flavor and texture:
Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom
Nuts & Seeds: Pecans, almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, or sunflower seeds
Dried Fruit: Apples, cranberries, raisins, cherries, or apricots
Extras: Coconut flakes, chocolate chips, marshmallows
For this batch, I used oats, coconut oil, honey, cinnamon, vanilla, dried apple, dried cranberries, and pecans — a cozy, fall-inspired blend that tastes like apple crisp for breakfast.
🕯️ How to Make It
Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
In a large bowl, combine oats, cinnamon, dried fruits and nuts, and salt.
In a small saucepan (or microwave-safe bowl), melt the coconut oil and honey together, then stir in vanilla.
Pour the wet mixture over the oats and stir until everything is evenly coated.
Spread onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer.
Bake for 20–25 minutes, stirring halfway through, until golden and fragrant.
Store in an airtight jar for up to four weeks — though in our house, it rarely lasts that long!
