Quick and Easy Quilting: Round Potholders

If you’re looking for a simple, satisfying sewing project that’s both beginner-friendly and practical, these round quilted potholders are just the thing! They’re the perfect way to practice small-scale quilting designs, make a dent in your fabric stash, and whip up something that’s as useful as it is pretty.

Whether you’re new to quilting or just need a quick project between bigger quilts, this pattern is sure to become a favorite. Plus, with just a couple of fat quarters, you can stitch up a whole stack in no time.

Before You Get Started

You can download the free pattern and templates here. Be sure your printer is set to print at 100% scale when printing the template pages.

You’ll need:

  • 2 coordinating fat quarters for the body and an additional fat quarter for the binding

  • Insul-Brite or other heat-resistant batting

Step-by-Step Assembly

  1. Print and Prepare Templates

    • Print at 100% scale, and check with the 1” square to confirm sizing.

    • For Template A, print two halves and tape together to form a full 10” circle.

  2. Quilt Your Fabric Sandwich

    • Layer (1) fat quarter right side down, batting, and (1) fat quarter right side up.

    • Quilt as desired—straight lines, free-motion, or even hand quilting if you prefer.

  3. Cut Your Pieces

    • From the quilted sandwich, cut out (1) Template A circle and (1) Template B crescent. You should have enough to cut two of each and make two potholders at a time.

  4. Assemble the Potholder Front

    • Layer Template B over Template A and topstitch along the curved edge to secure.

    • Optional: Add a small fabric loop to hang your potholder.

  5. Attach the Binding

    • Press binding strip in half lengthwise.

    • Align raw edges of binding with the outer edge of the potholder and clip in place.

    • Topstitch around the entire circle.

  6. Finish the Back

    • Fold binding over to the back and stitch down to secure neatly.

Tips & Customization

  • Add a seasonal applique (pumpkins, hearts, stars, etc.) to the crescent piece for extra charm.

  • Mix and match fabrics to coordinate with your kitchen or the holiday season.

  • Make a set as a thoughtful handmade gift!

These quilted hotpads are quick, fun, and endlessly customizable. Once you make one, you’ll be tempted to stitch them up for every season and occasion.
